SEO Basics: How to Get Found on Google Without Paying for Ads

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation. In plain English: making your website show up when people search for what you do on Google.

It’s not magic. It’s not a dark art. And you don’t need to pay someone thousands to get started.

Why SEO matters for service businesses

When someone in your area searches “plumber near me” or “accountant in Leeds,” Google decides who shows up first. If you’re not on that first page, you might as well not exist.

The good news? For local service businesses, the competition is often surprisingly low. A few smart moves can make a big difference.

The basics you can do yourself

1. Claim your Google Business Profile

This is free and it’s the single most important thing you can do for local SEO. Go to Google Business Profile, claim your listing, and fill in every single field.

Add photos. Add your services. Post updates. Ask happy customers to leave reviews. This alone can get you showing up in the map pack — those three businesses that appear at the top of local searches.

2. Make sure your website says what you do and where

Google can’t read your mind. If your homepage doesn’t mention what service you provide and where you provide it, Google won’t know to show you for those searches.

Include your main service and location in:

  • Your page title
  • Your main heading (H1)
  • Your meta description
  • Your body text (naturally, not stuffed in awkwardly)

3. Create a page for each service

Don’t lump everything onto one page. If you offer three main services, create a separate page for each. This gives Google more to work with and helps you rank for more specific searches.

4. Get your basics right

  • Make sure your site loads fast (under 3 seconds)
  • Make sure it works properly on mobile
  • Use proper headings (H1, H2, H3) to structure your content
  • Add alt text to your images

5. Start writing helpful content

A blog isn’t just for fun. Every blog post is another page that Google can index. Write about the questions your customers actually ask you.

“How much does a new boiler cost?” “Do I need an accountant for my side hustle?” “What’s the difference between SEO and PPC?”

Answer those questions honestly and thoroughly, and you’ll start appearing in search results.

What you can skip (for now)

  • Backlink building schemes
  • Keyword stuffing
  • Paying for “guaranteed #1 rankings” (nobody can guarantee that)
  • Technical SEO audits (important later, not yet)

The bottom line

SEO is a long game, but the rewards compound over time. Start with the basics, be consistent, and you’ll be surprised how quickly things start to shift.
